T. Relations between Mexico and the United States are experiencing their most contentious and critical phase since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) entered into force in 1994. During the 2016 presidential campaign, then Republican candidate Donald Trump called NAFTA the worst trade agreement negotiated by the United States in its history and promised to renegotiate it, as soon as he was elected president, to improve it. After his election as such, in May 2017, Trump officially notified the US Congress of his intention to start the renegotiation of NAFTA. The governments of Mexico and Canada immediately showed their willingness to accept the invitation from the United States, which was not surprising, since both countries had previously shown their interest in renegotiating NAFTA by participating in the negotiation and signing of the Association Agreement. Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), an agreement that both governments viewed as a way to modernize NAFTA.-
