Dynamics of Energy, Environment and Economy

Abstract

The concept of security is very important for the economic and social development of any region, state or country. In particular, the concept of energy security is now more important due to the negative effects of climate change and the high dependence on fossil fuels. Thus, the traditional energy security based on the use of fossil fuels is becoming highly questionable and renewable energies seem to be the best option to provide true energy security taking care of the environment and society in general. This chapter presents the current framework of renewable energy systems that impacts the energy performance and availability in the state of Baja California (which is part of the Cali-Baja region, formed by the hypothetical union of the states of California and Baja California) with the objective of promoting the energy security of the state. Finally, an analysis and conclusion regarding the energy security of the state are presented based on the energetic potentialities considering the autochthone renewable energy sources and the current energy regulatory framework of Mexico. RESUMEN El concepto de seguridad es muy importante para el desarrollo económico y social de cualquier región, estado o país. En particular, el concepto de seguridad energética cobra ahora mayor importancia debido a los efectos negativos del cambio climático y la alta dependencia de los combustibles fósiles. Así, la tradicional seguridad energética basada en el uso de combustibles fósiles se está volviendo altamente cuestionada y las energías renovables parecen ser la mejor opción para brindar una verdadera seguridad energética cuidando el medio ambiente y la sociedad en general. Este capítulo presenta el marco actual de los sistemas de energía renovable que impacta el desempeño y la disponibilidad energética en el estado de Baja California (que forma parte de la región Cali-Baja, formada por la unión hipotética de los estados de California y Baja California) con la objetivo de promover la seguridad energética del estado. Finalmente, se presenta un análisis y conclusión respecto a la seguridad energética del estado con base en las potencialidades energéticas considerando las fuentes de energía renovables autóctonas y el marco regulatorio energético actual de México.
